2010 During the winter, especially during January, February and March, there was a significant increase in the average rainfall and days with precipitation, while average temperatures dropped by about 3 ° C. The ascent of a field of high pressure guaranteed good weather during budding and flowering, which took place for the Nero d'Avola between May 15th – 20th (slightly later than the last five years). The following months gave us very stable weather conditions, and almost total absence of rain until the end of August with temperatures slightly below average, in particular in the last ten days of July and first week of August, where temperatures reached 16.5 °C for 7-8 days, after which, the temperature rose from the 2nd week of August until the end of August touching 39.3 °C. The month of September, where we harvest 90% of the grapes, was characterized by a first week where there was 22 mm of rain and a general reduction of temperature (both maximum and minimum) which slowed down the ripening process, and consequently lengthened the collection date by more than 10 days. This particular situation induced metabolic and physiological conditions of ripeness for exceptional grapes; that is, the sugars which were already high at the end of August, have not increased much, whereas the phenolic maturity, both in terms of concentration in coloring and of finesse of the tannins, has grown. Of all the vintages produced, what is truly remarkable in this vintage was the balance between color, acidity, sugars and refined tannins of the seeds. The aromatic factors have also benefited significantly from the particular climatic conditions of the area. Evaluation*: Outstanding (*) see legend at the foot of the page
2009 A regular winter was followed by a warm and moderately wet spring, which provided good phenologic conditions for flowering and fruit set of clusters. The summer period was characterized by constant dry weather from May to September that has created long periods of water stress, compensated for by the use of emergency irrigation. In particular, the months of August and September gave above-average temperatures and low rainfall. To improve the ripening of the grapes, during the second week of August we made an important intervention of cluster thinning of the Nero d'Avola. The grapes were harvested from 24 August until mid September. Uniformity and degree of ripeness of the grapes has resulted in a harvest of good quality from which we have obtained elegant and concentrated wines. Evaluation*: Good (*) see legend at the foot of the page
2008 2008 was an exceptional year featuring an annual weather pattern that had incredible consequences for grapes. The winter season was characterized by periods of widespread instability with alternating patterns of high pressure that brought temperatures above the seasonal average of 3 / 4 ° C. A sharp frost occurred in mid-February with night time temperatures dropping to 0/-2 ° C. The stage of germination for Nero d’Avola occurred at the end of March and increased in the month of April during a period of high relative humidity and temperatures slightly above average. Flowering, which occurred in the first ten days of May, occured in optimal conditions, with dry weather and seasonal temperatures. The summer months elapsed with stable and low rainfall, in particular, there were two waves of heat that led to temperatures above 42 ° C with scirocco winds in the second half of June and the first ten days of July. The middle of August has featured average temperatures that were lower than the average of the period due to strong temperature fluctuations that persisted until the first week of September. These conditions, combined with an absence of significant rainfall and low relative humidity, have resulted in a exceptional ripeness of grapes with an accumulation of coloring and flavoring of the highest quality. The harvest was completed September 21 with the Nero d'Avola. The wines are characterized by a large concentration in color, aromas and tannins that are very fine and silky. 2007 The months of January and February were characterized by a low rainfall and temperatures well above the 4 – 5°C average; this trend persisted even into the last decade of February. The conditions encouraged a rapid warming of land that caused an early advancement of the sprounting phase. The phase was nearly 10 days early, taking place in the first week of March. The months of March and April reversed the trend of rainfall that began in Januray with repeated passages of disruption caused by abundant rainfall well above average. Temperatures have remained in the seasonal media. This particular situation of rain and high humidity combined with seasonal temperatures caused some mildew attack. The advance of the bud caused early flowering that occurred, as expected, in the first ten days in April. The spring progressed normally until the middle of June when there was a strong wave of heat caused by anticyclone effects. Temperatures reached more than 43 ° C with strong scirocco winds. This slowed the growth of the plants after the strong advance accumulated between March and April. Even in the following month until the beginning of August there was a series of successive high heat waves with total absence of rain and temperatures consistently above the 39-40 ° C. The situation was normalized by August 10 with temperatures that never exceeded 32°C and sharp fluctuations in temperature between day and night. These temperate conditions continued throughout September promoting optimal ripeness of the grapes; in particular a balanced accumulation of sugars; acidity and color. The Nero d’Avola begins to turn in the last ten days of July; however, this occurred earlier than average, by about 7 days. The health quality of the grapes was perfect except for one buzzer – leaf (insect)attack in the period of August, with levels of polyphenolic ripeness very good. The tannins, upon tasting the berries; were fine and decidedly sweet, with intensely colored skins. The harvest in 2007 ended with the last grapes of Nero d'Avola on September 16.
