MIX 36: the label design
Mix36 is a wine with a very particular, unique genesis: it is born from the continuous research made by our agronomist and oenologist, aimed at selecting the best clones, byotipes of Sangiovese to produce wines of the highest quality, a process started at the end of the 90’s. The result of this research consists in the identification of 36 different biotypes of Sangiovese, including 18 massal selections coming from our old vineyards, all planted on a single vineyard.
So the aim was not to create a new wine, but to do pure research, to create a “laboratory vineyard” and nursery of the sangiovese. From this vineyard some winen samples were made, very few bottles, just assembling all the 36 existing biotypes, after 36 fermentations and single refinements. The wine was so surprising that it was decided immediately to start the production, in a very limited number of bottles, about 3,000. The first vintage was 2008.
Following with our philosophy, we decided to give priority to the members of the Mazzei Wine Club and during the 2009 Cavalieri Day they were made to taste the first bottles of this new project, bottles without labels and nameless, taken directly from the cellar. The label was born later, and it was Francesco Mazzei's desire to keep the "experimental" approach from which the wine was born also in the graphics. The label of Mix 36 is just that, a technical sheet, scientific research, gives all the information on the characteristics of the land, on production, on winemaking. The idea was to recall the adhesive labels of the winery, in which only the technical details appear, without graphic tinsel. Mix36 is a research project, a "Sangiovese symphony".
